Strategic Focus

The School Community is the environment in which the Near North District School Board strategically directs its work. School Communities provide opportunities to offer appropriate pathways for student learning. Learning pathways support all students, including those with special needs, or "at-risk" as they seek their post-secondary destination. Programs and services for students are provided in one or more community schools. The Near North District School Board plays a major role in the development and vitality of our "northern" community.

Core Business
i) Program Delivery

The Near North District School Board offers the Ontario Curriculum to any students in its jurisdiction. Programs are modified and adapted for students with special needs. Staff is provided professional development support to ensure quality practices. Program delivery is based on research and exemplary practices.
iii) Partnerships

The Near North District School Board acknowledges the role of several educational partners. School Councils mirror the key partners including parents and community. The Near North District School Board seeks advice from its partners. In addition, the Near North District School Board will collaborate with partners when the partnership provides advantages or added value with respect to programs and services.
ii) Support and Services

The Near North District School Board uses a differentiated staff model. Teachers are supported by other education professionals. The focus of all educational and operational activity is creating a positive learning environment for student and staff successes. All business and operational services acknowledge the special nature of education.
iv) Advocacy

The Near North District School Board is an advocate for public education. The Near North District School Board will solicit appropriate resources and pursue equitable treatment for the students and school communities in its jurisdiction.

This END is further interpreted to include, but not limited to the following results:

  • Graduates have the academic knowledge and skills to continue their education or obtain employment.Students have skills and attitudes to be socially responsible members of society.
  • Students with special physical, cognitive, social or cultural needs achieve their personal potential.

* "Learners" are interpreted to include those between the ages of 4 and 21, unless otherwise mandated by legislation. Those over 21 may be accommodated on a cost-recovery basis.

Vision Statement

Beginning today, our energies will be focused on moving us towards achieving our vision. It is our vision that:

  • The Near North District School Board provides all learners with a consistent, well balanced curriculum which gives the knowledge, skills and values required in a technological society and necessary to be life-long learners;
  • Board wide standards reflect Ministry documents and curriculum materials which promote social values, tolerance, respect, citizenship, cultural diversity and work related skills;
  • We promote environmental awareness appreciation, ethics and stewardship in the classroom and in administrative practices;
  • The interactions between and among staff, students and the community demonstrate the values of trust, honesty, respect, integrity and equity;
  • We have learning and working environments that are safe, welcoming and supportive of all;
  • We empower all stakeholders to engage in decision making in the spirit of collaboration and collegiality;
  • We celebrate the achievements of students and staff;
  • We are committed to learning and development in our organization and we invest in quality professional development for all staff;
  • We focus on providing human, material and financial resources necessary to allow schools to deliver programs that meet the individual needs of all learners;
  • Throughout the Board, communications amongst all stakeholders are clear, concise, timely and responsive;
  • We are all advocates for students and public education;
  • We develop partnerships that promote the social, emotional and academic growth of learners and support the achievement of our vision;
  • Leadership at all levels facilitates the achievement of the vision and develops concise policies and administrative guidelines in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders;
  • We are committed to continuous improvement through measuring our progress towards achieving our vision;
  • The Board and staff are accountable to the community and each other for the achievement of this vision.
